And we're back...

Monday, August 30, 2004 by Ryan

The New HouseWell the high-speed modem finally arrived today so things are back up and running as usual. The move was pretty uneventful, seems so far that everything made it unscathed. Just over a week later and we're pretty much settled in - I've got a few odd jobs here and there but for the most part the boxes are gone and everything put away.

The contact info update went out last week - if anyone didn't get the e-mail just drop me a message and I'll send it to you.

Not content with moving everything last week we also decided , "What the heck, might as well throw a new car in the mix!". After an interesting negotiation - a story too long to post here - we pretty much got a steal of a price on a new 2004 Mazda 6 Sport Wagon (emphasis on the SPORT!). As for the truck - we sold it at auction a few weeks ago. Thanks to our great mechanic, who took it for us, and the "buy based on what you see" style of the auction we managed to get far more for it than if we had decided to try and trade it in ourselves. Surprisingly I haven't snapped a pic of the car yet - but when I do I'll post it here.

Last, but not least, we had some unfortunate news last week as well. My great-grandmother, Betty Evans, passed away last week after a brief stint in hospital following a fall. At 96 she'd certainly lived a long full life and even became a great-great grandmother last year. She's going to be missed - but considering she was 70 the year I was born we've certainly all gotten a lot more time with her than most people do their great-grandmothers - if they even ever had the chance to meet their's.

The silver lining to a funeral is the opportunity to see relatives you rarely see, and of course share some great stories about the person's life. So although we were gathered for a sad occasion we had some great moments with the extended family all in one spot again.

In baby news, we've got our first pre-natal class this week so more updates to follow soon.

Movin' Movin' Movin'

Well the day is pretty much here - movers come at 9am tomorrow morning.

Needless to say there's nothing out there much more disrupting than a move (I'm sure our opinion on that will change come mid-October though). Unfortunately that disruption carries over to this site too. While we're in the process of moving we'll have a 5-day lag until we can get our new High-speed Internet up and running - so the box I usually use to host this site will also be offline.

I've copied the site up to another server temporarily but for the time being the photo galleries will be offline as they're database driven and I won't be able to copy the database over to the temporary server.

Look for an e-mail in the next few days with our new conatct information and address.

See you on the other side!

Where does the time go?

Thursday, August 12, 2004 by Ryan

Jeez. Look up and it's 10 weeks later.

Well, buying a house, having a baby, selling a truck and buying a car will probably do that to you. (Oh and on top of that there's an addition going on the cottage in the midst of all this.)

Our house closes tomorrow so that's been our major distraction for the past few weeks. Trying to avoid the chaos of our last move we've been packing up a little bit every weekend, our dining room has quickly become a storage room stacked with boxes two-deep and almost to the ceiling. The sunroom has its fair share of boxes as well. In true Erin style, every box has a colour coded label representing a level in the house, along with an itemized list of the important stuff in each box and a letter representing the room it needs to end up in. Here's hoping we don't get a bunch of illiterate, colour-blind movers. We'll be moving on the 21st - you're all of course welcome to come help out - we know you're just dying to. Once we get the numbers and such we'll send out an e-mail to everyone.

Our other distraction for the week is the departure of our truck. Its 4x4 system has been broken for about a year now and in preparation for selling it in a few weeks I took it into the mechanic to get it fixed, where it promptly chewed through a brand new $800 part right in front of our eyes - and that was the cheap option. So rather then bother trying to fix it and then try to sell it I sent it off to auction with the mechanic to be sold to the highest bidder. Good news is it went for a reasonable price but to get any bidding action on it the mechanic had to offer folks a test drive before they completed the sale. We're just working out what the actual price will be and hopefully we'll get this rather expensive chapter behind us. Needless to say it's the last GM I'll ever be buying.

Putting the truck behind us we've turned our sights on the Mazda6 Sport Wagon (I can feel another hair go grey just typing the word "wagon") - unfortunately they don't have a "wood panelling" option though or that would have cinched the deal for Erin. Hopefully in the next week or two we'll be driving around in our shiny new money-pit. In the meantime I'm trapped in vehicle purgatory driving Korea's concept of a Lawn Mower/Go-Kart Hybrid called the Hyundai Accent that I've rented to hold us over. Hopefully I don't run into anyone I know while driving about.

As for Erin and the baby things are going well. Erin's still feeling great and if she stands still I'm convinced you can actually watch her grow. The baby continues to do it's best Alien impersonation as it tries to work its way out of her belly button. I'm convinced its just getting all worked up for the Olympics. Its certainly perfected the Intra-womb Somersault and as far as I can tell is already into a size 6 shoe. We met one of our new midwives the week before last, we both really like her and can't wait to meet the other midwife next week. She said everything looks great, the baby measured a little bigger than expected at this time but said it's nothing to worry about - from feel she was pretty surprised at how long the baby's legs were. We're kind of in the mid-pregnancy lull at the moment, aside from Erin getting bigger it feels a lot more hurry-up and wait right now - but its still a blast. A couple weekends ago Erin had her first Braxton-Hicks contraction. She was really excited when it happened but I suspect that novelty might wear off a bit by week 38.

We haven't really had much time to get things organized baby wise as we've been focusing on the house and packing. Our stroller came in a couple of weeks ago. We got a Zooper Boogie, it's apparantly what all good yuppies are pushing their kids around in now. We managed to get one of the last Black/Silver strollers available in the order (the store had placed the order in May - The next one won't come in until Novemer). Erin had a great time pushing a teddy bear around the apartment "just for practice". Needless to say we're both looking forward to have a real baby to put in it.

Our only other purchase was the crib. We'd been doing some research and some, we'd been told, might have 6-8 weeks wait - and with Erin at almost 32 weeks we didn't have much time to spare! Through a series of events though, we managed to find the actual builder's outlet store in Toronto. So we stopped by there this morning, swung our deal and were all set to get put on the waiting list- and lo and behold he wheeled it out from the back room. So much for the big wait. Not wanting to take chances though we took it today anyways just in case.

Updates should be a little more frequent over the next few weeks as we get settled in the house and things start to happen with the car & baby.

Hope all are well.

Ryan
